ART HISTORY - 1/2 Credit
Course No. 706
It is often easier to understand history by seeing pictures than by reading about it. People over the ages have put their philosophy and meaning of life into paintings and other artwork that can be decoded, in a sense, so that we can understand what life meant to other people, times and cultures. This year, we will be studying art from the Renaissance. Christian art will be a focus as well as art for all people groups. This class is open to anyone--you need not have taken the other art history classes to take this course. Some of the people who should take this class include art majors, any college bound students, history majors, students avoiding a studio art class, students planning to go on a WCHS European art trip, or anyone looking for a truly interesting class.

Opportunities
- Field Trips
- Mrs. Heisey periodically needs parents to accompany students on field trips to the Columbus Museum of Art. Watch for parent survey.
- CCAD Saturday School
- If you wish to remain on their mailing list, you must call each summer. They will send you a flyer about their Saturday programs. They have a drawing challenge each fall where students win scholarships based on their work accomplished during this one session. Many students have benefited from this program which is for students in grades 4-12. http://www.ccad.edu/
- Fort Hayes Art School
- Several art students form WCHS have gone half days to Fort Hayes. This accomplishes much as many of these students have earned the larger scholarships to CCAD. These students have longer, more focused art classes. These students are also guaranteed art in their scheduling. If you have determined that CCAD or another art school is for sure your college goal, you should at least consider this opportunity offered through the Columbus Public Schools. It's not Christian and it's not for everyone, but many have benefited. See Etta Mae Harris or Kathy Kanzeg for details. Mrs. Heisey has names of recent Fort Hayes students with whom you may want to talk. This is a 2-year half-day program for Juniors and Seniors. Students choose between a Commercial Art program or Fine Arts. http://www.fthayes.com/
- Scholarships And Portfolios
- Do not give away your artwork if you think you might go to art school. You will need it for a portfolio. Some colleges require it for entry to art school. Most scholarships are based on student portfolio which would be reviewed by colleges in February. Call your college to make sure you have the correct requirements and dates due. Colleges and universities may not require a portfolio; virtually all art schools do require one. Some require one that is on photographic slides. Ceramic work or other 3-D work may need to be photographed in any case. Most schools want 12-25 pieces of your best high school drawings, done from life or still life, In a large envelope. They do not want plagiarized work or 'cute' work such as cartoons. They do want well structured drawings emphasizing a creative look at a familiar subject. CCAD publishes a nice list of suggestions for a portfolio. Your art teacher will work with you to make sure that your artwork best represents your strengths. Do not wait to get scheduled for some art. By fall of your senior year you should have the 2-hour paining class.
