BUSINESS PRINCIPLES AND MANAGEMENT - 1 Credit

Course No. 501

A business consultant along with business leaders from the community and the classroom teacher will present students with an understanding of the nature of business, how it operates and how it is managed. The business consultant and the special speakers, who come to the class on a weekly basis, will present a dynamic approach to understanding current business practices. Student-formed companies and a stock game will also bring fun and action to the class. Students will use a computer on a regular basis to develop a business plan and to create business presentation using presentation software. Topics covered in the class will include marketing, finance, advertising, sales, stocks, forms of business ownership, technology, etc.

Business Principles and Management is strongly recommended for the student who is considering a business career. It is also designed for all students who want to use the information for better personal business decision-making skills. This is a two-period class open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. There is no prerequisite for this class.


ACCOUNTING - 1 Credit

Course No. 502

The Accounting class will give the student a background in the basic accounting procedures used to operate a business. The course content will provide a good background for employment in office jobs and preparation for studying business courses in college. The complete accounting cycle is examined, which includes opening the books of a business and completing financial statements showing the profit or loss of a company. Computer-assisted applications will be used throughout the course, including a hands-on introduction to the popular accounting package QuickBooks. Although the course uses elementary math skills, it is not a math class. A computer practice set used at the end of the course will give the student a feeling of on-the-job training.

Accounting is strongly recommended for the person who is considering a business career. It is also a valuable tool for anyone who wants to learn how to recognize and summarize personal records for better financial decision-making skills. This is a two-period course open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. There is no prerequisite for this class.


MICROSOFT OFFICE APPLICATIONS - Part I - 1/2 Credit

Course No. 506

Microsoft Office is a new course that is a combination of what used to be Microsoft Office application – Part I and Microsoft Office application – Part II. If a student has already completed either Part I or Part II, the student may enroll in Microsoft Office. If a student has already completed both Part I and Part II, the student should NOT enroll in this course.

Microsoft Office will provide hands-on exposure to intermediate features of the Microsoft Office Suite of products: Excel, Publisher, Access, PowerPoint, Word, and Image Composer.

This one-period class is open to all grade levels. There is no prerequisite for this course. To insure that students gain an adequate level of technology literacy at WCHS, all students are encouraged to complete this course prior to graduation.


WEB PAGE DESIGN - 1/2 Credit

Course No. 508

This course will cover basic web page design techniques, and gives students hands-on experience with popular Web Design software tools. Students will be introduced to HTML concepts using the simple Windows Notepad editor, and then subsequently be introduced to Microsoft Frontpage, then Adobe (Macromedia) Flash and Adobe Dreamweaver tools. This class does not assume any prior computer programming or web page programming experience. This class does require general Internet browsing skills and an interest in learning about web page development topics. Students will also design their own basic web pages. Software tools used in this course include Microsoft Notepad, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Frontpage, and Adobe’s Macromedia Studio MX. Students will have the opportunity to learn introductory web page design skills with the various software tools used in this course.

This is a one-period class for freshmen through seniors.


COMPUTER PROGRAMMING - Visual Basic Part I - 1/2 Credit

Course No. 510

This one-semester course gives students an understanding and hands on experience of Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. This course of Visual Basic 6.0 covers a short history of programming languages, visual terminology, designing applications, variables, constants, selection structure and repetition structure. This course is intended to be the first programming class a student would take at WCHS. It is recommended that this class be taken before enrolling in either the Computer Programming C++ Part I or COMPUTER PROGRAMMING - Java courses, since C++ and Java are more complex programming languages.


COMPUTER PROGRAMMING - Visual Basic Part II - 1/2 Credit

Course No. 511

This one semester course is the second part of Visual Basic programming, and gives students the opportunity to broaden their skills using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. Students are given the opportunity to study sequential access files, menus, reports, dialog boxes, random access files, database access, and variable arrays using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. The prerequisite for this course is a minimum grade of C- in the Computer Programming - Visual Basic Part I class.


COMPUTER PROGRAMMING - C++ Part I - 1/2 Credit

Course No. 512

This one semester course gives students an understanding and hands on experience of Microsoft Visual C++6.0. This course of Visual C++6.0 covers a short history of programming languages, C++ basic terminology, data types, variables, functions, object oriented programming concepts, classes, designing applications, variables, constants, logical selection structures and loop structures. This course should be taken after a student has taken one or more of the offered Visual Basic programming classes, since C++ is a more complex programming language. The prerequisite course is Computer Programming - Visual Basic Part I. Prerequisite can be waived for students with strong math skills.


COMPUTER PROGRAMMING - C++ Part II - 1/2 Credit

Course No. 513

This one semester course will continue the students' understanding and hands on experience of Microsoft Visual C++6.0. This course will build on The Computer Programming - C++ Part I class and cover C++ concepts of arrays, data structures, event driven programming, graphical user interface (GUI) programming, and broader treatment of Object Oriented Programming (OOP) and Class concepts used in C++. This course should be taken after a student has completed the Computer Programming - C++ Part I class. The prerequisite is a minimum grade of C- in the Computer Programming - C++ Part I class.


COMPUTER PROGRAMMING - Java - 1/2 Credit

Course No. 514

This one semester course gives students an understanding and hands on experience of the Java programming language. This course of Java covers a short history of programming languages, Java basic terminology, data types, variables, constants, logical selection structures and loop structures. This course should be taken after a student has taken one or more of the offered Visual Basic programming classes, since Java is a more complex programming language. The prerequisite for this class is Computer Programming - Visual Basic Part I, or Computer Programming - C++ Part I. Prerequisite can be waived for students with strong math skills. Students who have previously taken and enjoyed the Computer Programming - C++ Part I class would do extremely well in this Java class due to the similarity of Java and C++. (Starting in the 2003-2004 school year the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science test will be based on the Java programming language.)


INDEPENDENT STUDY: Intro to IBM PC Hardware, Software and Networking - 1/2 Credit

Course No. 515

This one semester course will provide students with hands on experience, understanding the hardware and software components of IBM PCs. This under-the-hood class will involve troubleshooting and repairing common hardware and software problems that occur with PCs. Basic Peer-to-Peer networking concepts and hands-on assignments will also be part of this class. While this class will not fully prepare a student to take the A+ PC Certification exam, this class will allow students to determine if they enjoy hands on PC hardware and software tasks, and should allow students to prepare more effectively for the A+ Certification if they choose to pursue this goal.
