Science"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.." -- Genesis 1:1 TeachersCurriculumTwo Credits of the Following Required for Graduation: Science for Living; Investigative Physical Science or Biology. SCIENCE FOR LIVING - 1 CreditCourse No. 401 Science for Living is a non-college prep course which develops the scientific knowledge of students who are not college bound or who are in need of background to prepare them for entry into college prep courses. The Science for Living series of courses emphasizes Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science. The course is a one-hour class. The student may take the above two courses and then transfer into college prep courses or take four semesters of Science for Living to satisfy the requirements for high school graduation. Course fee: $20.00 per semester INVESTIGATIVE PHYSICAL SCIENCE - 1 Credit Course No. 403 IPS is an introductory course into the college prep science sequence. This course is designed to teach the math and chemistry necessary for success in the Biology and Chemistry courses that will be taken later. The student will be able to discover the systematic method and order that God has used from the creation of this world to its present maintenance. The course centers on the physical and chemical aspects of God's creation. Laboratory work is emphasized. A TI-83 calculator is recommended for this class. The prerequisite for this course is Algebra I. Course fee: $20.00 BIOLOGY - 1 Credit Course No. 404 General Biology will cover life and its origins in light of God's Word. Many relevant topics will be covered such as biochemistry, viruses, bacteria, cells, microscopy, plants, animals and ecology. Dissection and identification of plants and animals will be done along with many other course-related laboratory experiences. This course is college preparatory and is designed to serve as a prerequisite to Anatomy and Physiology and Chemistry. In order to take this course the student must have a C or higher in Investigative Physical Science (IPS). Course fee: $20.00 HONORS BIOLOGY - 1 Credit Course No. 405 This course is a comprehensive study for future college science majors touching on most of the major areas of the biological sciences. The student will learn information and lab techniques for cytology, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, botany and zoology. This course emphasizes hands-on lab experience and stresses biological and zoology concepts that are significant to Christian ethics. This is a weighted course. In order to take this course you must have earned at least an A in IPS or permission of instructor. Course Fee: $25.00 ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY I - 1 Credit Course No. 406 Anatomy and physiology is a college prep course designed to introduce the student to several systems of the human body. The integumentary, skeletal, endocrine, circulatory, digestive, muscular, nervous, lymphatic, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems will be studied. Laboratory work will include EKG and blood pressure reading and a detailed dissection of the fetal pig and cat. The prerequisite for this course is a grade of at least a C in General or Honors Biology. Course fee: $30.00 HONORS ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY - 1 Credit Course No. 408 This class is designed for the student who is interested in pursuing a science or medical major in college. The course will be taught at a greater depth and move at a greater pace than will the regular Anatomy and Physiology class. The human integumentary, skeletal, endocrine, circulatory, digestive, muscular, nervous, lymphatic, urinary, respiratory and reproductive systems will be studied. Laboratory work will include EKG and blood pressure reading along with a detailed dissection of the fetal pig and cat. This is a weighted class. The prerequisite for this class is at least a B+ in Honors Biology or Biology or permission from the instructor. Course fee: $35.00 GENERAL CHEMISTRY - 1 Credit Course No. 409 This course begins where IPS left off. God's physical and chemical world runs to perfection. Although man may choose to disobey God's laws, chemicals never do. We will primarily study chemical interaction in the inorganic world but an introduction to organic chemistry will be given. The laboratory work will be more technique driven and the lab report will be more detailed than in IPS. The labs will be discovery in nature. Due to the frequent application of math, the student must have completed Algebra I with a C average and have completed IPS and Biology prior to enrolling in Chemistry. Course fee: $20.00 HONORS CHEMISTRY - 1 Credit Course No. 410 This course is designed to start where IPS left off. The pace will be quicker than in General Chemistry. With the new technology at WCHS, many labs will be exploratory in nature. This course is for the serious chemistry student who desires a deep understanding of the physical and chemical aspects of God's world. A graphing calculator (preferably a TI-83) is required for this course. This is a weighted course. The prerequisite for this course is the completion of Algebra II with an A- or permission from the instructor. The student must have also completed IPS and Biology prior to enrolling in Honors Chemistry. Course fee $30.00 GENERAL PHYSICS - 1 Credit Course No. 411 God's methods of the creation and maintenance of his universe are both systematic and consistent. By using the natural laws God has put in place, we are able to study and predict the results of many physical actions. The course starts by studying the law of motion, energy and particle interaction. The course ends by exploring the wave action of both mechanical and electromagnetic waves. This course is focused around math and laboratory experiments. Each lab requires a mathematical analysis of the study included within a written report. This course is an introductory course in Physics. A graphing calculator (preferably a TI-83) is required in this class. The prerequisite for this course is FST or Precalculus or permission of instructor. Lab fee $15.00 STUDY OF ORIGINS - 1/2 Credit Course No. 413 This class will exam the Biblical account of creation through a scientific eye. We will compare the evolution model to the literal account of the Bible as well as to other interpretations of Scripture. We will spend time reading articles and short books by various authors and critique these views. Testing will be primarily in the form of essays and short papers where the emphasis will not be on rote memory but on critical thinking. MARINE BIOLOGY - 1 Credit Course No. 414 Marine Biology will provide an overview of marine biology along with its relationships to other sciences such as oceanography, ecology, chemistry, geology and physics. The primary emphasis will be on the marine environment but freshwater ecosystems will be examined. Students will be involved in field research both in Ohio and at the Marine Science Institute on Roatan Island, Honduras. The course fees will include a seven-day trip to Roatan Island, a weekend trip to Stone Lab in Lake Erie and scuba lessons. Scuba diving fins, boots, mask and snorkel are required. The course is typically offered every other year. Approximate cost: $2300 Resources |
