SpanishReal communication and useful language skills are integral components of Spanish regardless of level. Creative use of the language is expected from the beginning level. Naturally, the vocabulary, grammar and contexts that are used have been chosen with degrees of frequency and degrees of difficulty in mind. Vocabulary is related to the central theme of a unit and grammar is presented not as an end in itself, but rather as a means of communicating as effectively and accurately as possible. Culture, as well as the linguistic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, are integrated into a thematic approach that gives meaning to the language being learned. Projects are required in all four levels. Students in all four levels memorize Scripture in Spanish and learn Bible songs. In addition, they practice presenting Campus Crusade's Four Spiritual Laws in Spanish and by level 4, they write and present their own personal testimonies. We remind ourselves constantly that someday each of us may have an opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus Christ to a Spanish speaking person. Daily classroom activities on all four levels include paired and small group communication in Spanish, written practice in workbooks, vocabulary games and quizzes, grammar games and quizzes. In addition, we listen to audio tapes of Hispanic music and Hispanic speakers interacting with one another. We watch and interact with videos of Hispanic speakers. Interactive computer activities are available in the library to give the students additional practice with the vocabulary and grammar skills. Assessment is based on quizzes, chapter tests, class participation, workbook activities, projects and final exams. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are assessed regularly.
