The library media center exists to serve the student body, teaching staff and parents as a resource center. The WCHS Media Center strives to provide the books, periodicals, audio-visual, electronic, and other resource materials necessary for students personal intellectual growth as well as opportunities to broaden the scope of their knowledge and appreciation of the world.
In this information age it is essential that one knows how to access technology in order to locate information in a wide variety of subjects. Two goals of the center is to support the curriculum and help students become proficient in their search for information. Research is a thinking process and it is our goal to help students become thoughtful researchers.
All students graduating from WCHS should be proficient in the following skills:
- accessing the electronic catalog to find library materials
- be familiar with the Dewey Decimal system and how to locate books
- know how to use the vertical file
- be aware of the periodicals in the center and know how to access databases of periodicals at the public libraries
- be aware of all the databases and CD-ROMs available in the MC
- be aware of the software available on MC computers
- be proficient at doing internet searches for legitimate information that can be documented and cited in research papers
- be familiar with the reference section
- be able to use any of the audio-visual equipment available
- know the procedure for checking materials in and out
- know the procedure for printing and copying materials
- know the procedure for logging on the computer network
- know how to save information on the computer network
Students should also be aware of the following activities:
- doing an internet college search
- using SAT/ACT software and accessing AP course and testing information
- writing and publishing original works of prose and poetry
- Christian Music Library
