COACHES SPOTLIGHT: JEFF HARTINGS
Jeff Hartings knows football, and his experience speaks for itself. As a college All-American, Pro-Bowler, and Superbowl Champion, he’s one of the best. As WC’s Head Varsity Football Coach, Jeff puts that same passion and energy into his players as their mentor, pastor, and friend.
How would you describe your role at WC?
“As head football coach and leader of the football program, I consider myself and our staff as youth pastors. We are here to not only coach football, but to disciple students.”
How did you get into coaching?
“I’ve played football my entire life. After football, I did youth sports ministry in the inner city of Pittsburgh. I started coaching football coaching at the high school level when my sons starting playing. When we moved to Columbus and the WC football coach position became available, I felt like it was an opportunity to become a head coach at a school my family and I really liked. It has been a blessing even through the challenging times.”
What is the most rewarding thing for you about coaching?
“The relationships with the students and assistant coaches have been the most rewarding. ‘Relationships matter’ is one of our core values. Oftentimes people do not value relationships as much as we used because social media has connected us to the world. It’s important for me to be connected personally with every student and coach on the team.”
How do you incorporate faith into your coaching?
“We have a ‘Warrior Way’ devotion every day. I try to share one piece of wisdom that they can think about for that day.”
