Welcome to November! I have seen and heard many references this week that launches us straight from ‘Welcome to Fall’ to ‘Merry Christmas’ which brings joy to some and a huge sense of dread for others. During the month of November, I thought it would be good to focus on routines, patterns, and expectations so we can be ready to celebrate the holidays with focus and joy! 

The school year is moving along and report cards for the first quarter have been sent home. Second-quarter is underway and as parents, you have the opportunity to schedule a conference on Thursday evening or Friday morning to talk about your child’s progress and school experience so far this year. I would encourage you to take the time to schedule a conference if you have concerns or questions. It is a blessing to have parents who partner with the teachers to help the student succeed. If you would like to schedule a time to meet with me, I have openings. My office is at the Upper School. As you plan out your week, think about the routines in your home. We are just beginning the 11th week of school, how are your routines? Did you start off the year strong and fall back into old patterns? Are you thinking, ‘what routine?’. Do you long for a routine or some kind of order in the morning as you drive up to the drop-off line without your child’s lunch or coat? We have all been there and mistakes happen each day. 

Here are a few helpful suggestions to get a routine started in November and hopefully help lessen stress and give some room for joy! The goal: to make a schedule and routine now so we can add additional responsibilities into our routine as the holiday season quickly approaches: 

Suggestions for Creating A Routine

Your morning routine begins the night before as you plan for the day ahead: 

  • Outfits 
  • Breakfast 
  • Lunch 
  • After school activity prep 

Parents: wake up BEFORE your kids. 

  • Start the day with a scripture or devotion. Try downloading the YouVersion Bible App and read/listen to the scripture and devo before your feet hit the floor. 
  • Give the day to the LORD and commit it to Him in prayer. 
  • Pray for your children and their day.
  • Eat breakfast and create and establish order in the morning routines. 
  • Teach your children responsibility: Have the morning jobs posted in the house and agree ahead of time (the night before) who will do what. Each new day provides the opportunity to practice and adjust the routines. 

I know this can be very challenging for many, but I also know that the time it takes to prepare and plan out your mornings and week help make all the difference in your stress level as a parent.  

See what parts of this will work in your family this week. The evenings will vary depending on family size and activities but there should be as much of a predictable order in the evening as possible.

Let’s make this our goal this week: Psalm 118:24: ‘This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.’

This Wednesday, November 3 from 10-11 a.m. Please RSVP if you plan to attend. We will meet on the first Wednesday of every month from November to April in the Grace Polaris Ministry Center. Bring your own drink and come for an hour of fellowship.
