Upper School Bible and Hebrew teacher receives this year’s peer-nominated honor

Head of School Troy McIntosh, Upper School Principal Dr. Buzz Inboden, and PTF Endowment Fund representative Jim Edwards surprised Dr. Joe Price in his classroom to share the news that he had been selected PTF Endowment Fund’s 2021 Teacher of the Year. Dr. Price’s wife and two children were also present for the surprise announcement.

This award is given annually by a vote among peers to a faculty member who exemplifies excellence in teaching, Christian discipleship, and love for students. The PTF Endowment Fund (which is transitioning to the Worthington Christian School Fund for Academic Excellence) provides a gift to the teacher as well as a place on the Teacher of the Year recognition plaque located in each school building.

As Edwards and McIntosh were presenting Price with this award, McIntosh humorously recounted one of his first memories of the Bible teacher’s career at WC. McIntosh happened to be walking in the hallways in the first few days of the 2015 school year and overheard one student exclaim to another as they left Price’s Hebrew class, “I didn’t understand anything he was talking about, but that was awesome!”

Dr. Price has taught Bible at WC since 2015. He currently teaches Hebrew, eleventh-grade Bible, and team-teaches seventh-grade Bible. With a master’s degree in Biblical Studies from Ashland Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in Hebrew and Hebrew Bible and the ancient Near East, Dr. Price spent many years in higher education, as a student, and as an instructor. Having taught several courses at OSU and Ashland Theological Seminary, becoming a high school Bible teacher required a radical change in Dr. Price’s pedagogy, assessments, delivery, and expectations for his students. Upper School Principal Dr. Buzz Inboden explains that this is a change that Price embraced. In Dr. Buzz’s words, “Dr. Price is both brilliant and humble. He is aspirational in that he makes students want to be educated; he makes being educated a winsome thing.”

Upon receiving the award, Dr. Price said, “I am surprised to receive this award, and I feel honored that my peers chose me for it.” On behalf of the entire WC community, we congratulate Dr. Price and express our deep gratitude for his excellent service to our school.
