TEACHER TUESDAY: DENYSE SMITH
Denyse Smith is a Kindergarten teacher at Worthington Christian and has been on WC’s faculty since 2008.
How would you describe your teaching style? “I like to say every day is a great day in Kindergarten! It is my joy to daily encourage academic skills but also sprinkle in the love of Christ. Children thrive in a positive, loving environment that also has boundaries and procedures.”
What is the most challenging aspect of your work? “The biggest challenge in K is having enough time to thoroughly complete all of the academic tasks. Another challenge is transitioning the K student into the school setting at the beginning of the year. I want their first experience of school to be positive.”
What is the most rewarding aspect of your work? “A Kindergarten teacher has the gift of seeing students begin their educational experience. My greatest joy is teaching K students to read.”
How do you incorporate faith and learning? “The greatest privilege I have as a Christian school teacher is to weave Christ into every aspect of my students’ learning. Each moment is an opportunity to point my students to the Lord. It can be in a Math or Science lesson or a redirection in behavior that leads to a Biblical connection.”
