Jessica Root steps into a new role alongside Trevor McLaughlin as they lead and serve the Upper School this year.
As we begin the 2026-27 school year, our Upper School leadership team includes a familiar face in a new role and a new face at WC. Jessica Root (WC ’06) has stepped into the role of Interim Upper School Principal, and Trevor McLaughlin joins WC as Assistant Principal.
Root may have a new title this year, but she is certainly no stranger to WC. A WC alumna, she returned to the school in 2022 as a counselor before moving into the Assistant Principal role, where she has served for the past two years. This summer, Root was named Interim Upper School Principal and officially stepped into the role on August 1.
Over the past four years, Root has worked closely with students and faculty and helped lead efforts across student life, experiential learning, service, and school safety. She has completed the WC Leadership Academy, earned her Principal Certification through the Association of Christian Schools International, and is currently pursuing an EdS in educational leadership from Gordon College. Her experience at WC and the relationships she has already built throughout the Upper School provide valuable continuity as she begins this new role.
Looking ahead to the year, Root shared, “My heart for this year is to create an environment where all students know they matter and feel like valuable members of our Upper School community from day one. I can’t wait to see how they each shine in the areas where God has uniquely gifted them. I am so grateful the Lord has given me the opportunity to partner with families and faculty to see our students flourish this year.”
Joining Root in Upper School leadership is McLaughlin, who brings more than 14 years of educational experience to WC. Most recently, a high school Social Studies teacher in New Jersey, his experience also includes curriculum and instructional leadership, mentoring and coaching educators, and serving as an Interim High School Vice Principal.
McLaughlin holds principal certifications in both Ohio and New Jersey and earned a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. He brings a heart for students and faculty and a leadership approach centered on being present, building relationships, working collaboratively, and serving others well. McLaughlin and his wife, Gabriella, moved to Ohio this summer with their two young sons.
As you see Root and McLaughlin at back-to-school events and throughout these first days, take a moment to say hello, welcome McLaughlin to WC, and encourage Root as she steps into her new role!
